Dynamic arm supports assist persons with limited arm function to move their arms and hands. These supports are mostly used by persons with muscle disorders or neurological or orthopedic disorders.
Purpose:
Dynamic arm supports help their users to reach, grab and manipulate again during daily activities such as eating, drinking, computer use, writing, play and kitchen and leisure activities. Also use in the workplace to improve working conditions is seen.
Use:
Dynamic arm supports help carry the weight of the arm thus relieving the shoulder area. This allows the user to move the arm against gravity in spite of limited function and power. FOCAL Meditech BV has re-invented dynamic arm support systems. The basic idea has been translated into different models.
The models:

Darwing is Focal’s most advanced dynamic arm support. It combines the advantages of the MAS types (construction underneath the arm) with te advantages of the Sling- like types.

TOP is a dynamic arm support that runs underneath the user's arm. Also electric versions are available.

SLING uses a counterweight in a tube that is connected to the user's arm by a cord. Also electric versions are available.

BALANCER is a simple foldable armsupport of the sling type.

All models except the BALANCER are available in mechanical or electric powered versions. Dynamic arm supports may be applied for one or two arms of the user depending on the user’s clinical status and his needs in daily life. They are most frequnetly mounted on a wheelchair. However, also application on a chair, table or undercarriage is possible.
The choice for a certain type of arm support again depends on individual needs and demands. After expert advice the arm supports are custom-made or adapted and mounted by trained specialists.
